Klobuchar and Franken vs. The Poor

The Cash for Clunkers program has just been extended by $2 billion. But there was an interesting amendment offered that would have made these entirely usable ‘clunkers’ available to those who desperately need, but can’t afford, a car. Our two compassionate Senators voted against the amendment.

I’m involved with a organization that helps released prisoners become fully functional members of their community. For these guys, getting a job that will sustain them is hard enough, but transportation to-and-from these jobs is a very difficult hurdle. These destroyed ‘clunkers’ would have gone a long way to easing that difficulty. I’m sure other charitable groups helping those in need could echo these sentiments.

Meanwhile, the House just voted to buy 8 new jets for Congressional junkets. It will be interesting to see how Klobuchar and Franken handle this when it hits their chamber.
