Wars and rumors of wars

It is no secret that my erstwhile blogging colleague Andy Aplikowski has made it his personal mission to depose sitting Minnesota GOP Chairman Ron Carey since election day.

I have not joined his crusade because 1) I am not active in Republican party politics; 2) I believe Ron Carey is a real movement conservative even if his responsibilities require him to defend some less-than-stellar candidates and elected officials; 3) Personally speaking, Ron was very kind to Kennedy vs. The Machine during the last election cycle.

That said, there is palpable opposition to Carey’s tenure as GOP chair among many with whom I visit who are active in the party.

This morning Andy brings word of a credible candidate (and genuine hero) to challenge Carey’s chairmanship.

Well there was really a movement in 2006, but I wouldn’t call it a conservative one.

    :)

But seriously, my issues with Carey are not about his own politics, they have absolutely nothing to do with my crusade. It is his leadership that I saw first hand that I disagree with.

I would encourage all my doubters to revisit the 2005 MNGOP Chairmanship election, especially the speeches which I recorded and posted on my blog. When you listen to the Ron Carey of 2005 talk about what he would do differently than the former Chair Eibensteiner, it is hard to believe we actually elected someone different, because it seems to me we actually went backwards.

[...] I personally have no dog in the race for state GOP chair.  I worked for one of Ron Eibensteiner’s companies when this blog started (not, I should note, a successful company, although its certainly wasn’t Eibensteiner’s fault), and always admired him.  I thought he deserved better than the party gave him after the ‘04 election.  Current chair Ron Carey excites strong emotions in some, but also has eloquent defenders.  I think fate dealt Carey lemons, to an extent – it was a lousy cycle even for great Republicans with long track records (see Phil Krinkie); the 2006 cycle was a “test of leadership” in the same way that the sinking of the Titanic was a “test of seamanship”; it was hard to make much of a positive showing.  That being said, Minnesota Republicans needn’t have suffered that bad a debacle, either. Mitch Berg references me in his post on this topic as an \”eloquent defender\” of Chairman Carey. That is inaccurate (although I appreciate the \”eloquent\” bit). I was simply pointing out some mitigating factors in Carey\’s tenure that should be kept in mind. Most importantly, I pointed out that since I am not a GOP activist, my opinion on the matter was essentially irrelevant.

  4. Truth v. The Machine » Archives » TvM Endorsement: Ron Carey for GOP Chair Says:

[...] It seems more than a little strange that two years after very publicly supporting GOP Chair Ron Eibensteiner’s re-election bid (and receiving our fair share of flak for it), the TvM crew would be backing the very man who defeated him.  And while we have watched Chairman Carey’s tenure with mixed bouts of admiration and concern, in the end we felt compelled to offer our endorsement of the Chairman in this overheated battle between two good conservative candidates.
