The Friday Concert and a Movie

Kroke is a trio from Krakow, Poland, whose music is rooted in Klezmer music, but they incorporate other styles, and so they have a captivating contemporary/Eastern European Jewish sound. They got together with iconoclastic violinist Nigel Kennedy and made a spectacular CD entitled East Meets East. In this clip, they perform “Kukush” from that CD. And here’s a sampling from the cd.

From this article:

Cracow’s former Jewish district of Kazimierz was just waking up from many years of lethargy. A Jewish-style restaurant, Ariel, opened and the tradition of daily concerts began. Kroke was the first band to play there. Two years later Steven Spielberg started shooting Schindler’s List in Cracow. The actors, including Ben Kingsley, spent evenings in Ariel, listening to klezmer music. Spielberg was so impressed by Kroke that he offered them a trip along with the film crew to Jerusalem. This was the start of the band’s foreign tours.

The movie, of course, is about a man who does what he can to save Polish Jews. Here is a montage. Not an easy movie to watch.
