Shame on the GOP for Olson endorsement
|
Michael Brodkorb touches all the bases on this indictment of the Republican Party’s shameful endorsement of Rep. Mark Olson for the Minnesota Senate in District 16. This is not a party dedicated to either public integrity or building a majority.

[...] and Gary at TvM has a nice take on it too, including a picture that I’m sure the DFL is gladly grabbing for lit hit pieces. [...]

There is a lot of blame to go around here.
*Mark Olson should not have run for anything this cycle. Lets leave aside the conviction, whether his wife or the voters forgive him etc. Being a Rep or a senator is not a right it’s a privilege and after subjecting the voters to this drama, he should have stood down and spared his constituents some more. He may even have had a chance to serve in the future assuming that the voters were as forgiving as his wife.
*All the people who are screaming now that Krueger should have gotten the endorsement should have worked harder to turn delegates. That’s what it’s always about, not who should prevail, but who has their people in place at the endorsing convention. That is all that matters. I’ve seen sure thing people lose many many times because they failed this basic task. I find it a little precious that people are now declaiming from blogs about what an outrage this was. Even showing up at the last minute as outside observers to lend support is almost never a good thing from my experience–it can screw the pooch entirely when locals get defensive. Why did so many experienced party people blow this thing? Even before this episode Mark Olson’s political obituary was written many many times. It just wasn’t smart to underestimate him or his support.
*The Senate 16 people who endorsed Olson are not fools but they made a error in judgment–they made this personal, they made it about Mark and Heidi. Or they accepted Mark and Heidi’s assertion that it was about them. It’s not about them, it’s about the rest of us and how poorly or how well we will fare in November. And he just made it a little harder. Hell, he could win the senate seat but the DFL will still be able to exploit the “wifebeater” storyline throughout the rest of the state and the suburbs and cost us dearly.

Thankfully SD63 has endorsed a solid candidate in Craig Marston to fill Dan Larson’s seat.
