A gnat swats at an elephant

Way back in this post, I listed some of my pet peeves, and Number 5 was “Bloggers who say “I reported” such and such when they just cut and pasted from an article online.”

I’m sorry to say that one of our own, a giant in the field, has run afoul of my arbitrary decree. Ed Morrissey at Hot Air yesterday,

Allahpundit reported last night on the plans for Obama to deliver his acceptance speech in front of a fake Greek temple…

No. No no no. Allahpundit did not “report” that. He simply excerpted and linked to someone else, who had simply excerpted and linked to Reuters.

Now, I’m a little grumpy because the day job is a headache, but, we only correct those we love.

However, I’ve also grown a little impatient with the whole blogging thing. I like the blogs for good writing, and keen insight. For actual reporting, I say God bless the mainstream media who have the resources and time to go out into the highways and byways and do actual reporting about what’s going on. Blogs are great for pushing stories that biased media would just as soon shove under the carpet, but blogs are not so great at trying to out-big media the big media.

As an example, here’s a BBC story on bloggers at DemCon.

Are they really contributing anything, just sitting all together in one room ingesting calories that some of them really don’t need? I hope you’re reading Bob Collins at Newscut. He’s an example of what blogs can contribute, and he’s cleaning everybody’s clock down there, and Lileks is doing his usual sweet work. But outside that and a few others, I’m no longer in need of the “well, I’m here and I see some delegates walking by” type of blogging.

Next week, I look forward to our varsity team being turned loose on St Paul. Go get ‘em boys. And girls.
