I can’t help but feel slightly responsible
|
Regular readers know my “why-didn’t-I-buy-one-sooner?” enthusiasm about Glock firearms. I will continue to say that if you don’t have time to compare with other brands (and there are other very good handguns from other manufacturers such as Ruger, Smith & Wesson, and Beretta), the Glock series of handguns, particularly the Glock 17, should be your choice. From PR Newswire on MSNBC:
I’ve found the Glock 17 to be reliable and accurate and I bring it to the gun range just about every time I go now. I think the Beretta 92 is starting to feel jealous in the gun safe, so I have to keep the Glock 17 on the night stand. Our gun laws may be changing significantly in the next 3-12 months, making handgun purchases more difficult. I don’t see an attempt to ban them like “assault weapons” at this time, which is ironic because if they truly wanted to ban “crime guns”, it would be handguns they would ban before our rifles. However, the Glock 17 (coincidentally) holds 17 rounds with its standard magazine. Attempts will be made and probably pass to limit capacity to 10 rounds. While you should be able to do your job with 10 rounds, if you want 17 round magazines, that is also a reason to purchase now rather than later. In other news, a successful deer hunt was made this weekend. I harvested a doe and all other members of the hunting party were successful as well. I’m looking forward to having one of my nephews joining us in the woods for the first time on Thursday to fill our remaining tags. Mmmm…venison, the other white meat. What more could a carnivore ask for? I’ll be dropping it off for processing tomorrow. Of course the best thing about hunting is being with family and friends. Doesn’t matter if you get anything, really, but we were fortunate to be able to thin the herd. Judging by the low number of shots fired on adjoining property this year, I think we had above average success so far. |

I’m buying in the next week or so. The Glock 21 didn’t fit my hand very well. I am also not too keen with the whole ‘the trigger is the safety’ deal that Glock’s employ.
What opinion do you have with the Springfield XD45?
I’m looking for a .45 since if they do go after handguns, they will start with the bigger ones. I tried the 21, XD45, and Sig P220 last Friday. The Sig was awesome, but the price and 8 round clip kinda suck.
The XD45 is what I am leaning towards right now. Any thoughts or experience with the brand?

If a person can handle a .45 (and most people can), it’s a great way to go. The .45 isn’t much more recoil than a 9mm and makes a bigger hole. Most recoil aversion is psychological.
Funny you should ask about the XD. I was XD before XD was cool. It was originally imported as the HS2000 at a very low priced $269?? polymer handgun. Since I hadn’t jumped on board the Glock bandwagon back then, but wanted to try polymer, I bought mainly one for the price. I have since traded it, but found it to be a good design with one exception: the original imported HS2000 (including mine) had extraction problems that the new XD has fixed.
So, I have fired the HS2000 and XD (wife’s coworker’s) in 9mm, but not .45. The grip safety is a nice feature and can add peace of mind if desired. The XD has a huge following and should suit your needs.
Check out xdtalk.com and see what you think before making any decision. Seems like honest discussion there. One post in particular:

My only .45 Auto (better get another) is a Ruger P90. Big, clunky, all metal, and only 8 round magazine. On the plus side, it digests anything and saved me a few bucks. It is also considered the most accurate of Ruger’s “P series” pistols and I would recommend it, but not necessarily before a Glock or XD.
I’ve held a SIG 220, but never fired one. Before the Glock, I was partial (and still am) to big all metal handguns. The SIG has European craftsmanship and accuracy. Worth the cost to a collector? Maybe, but there are a lot less expensive options out there for the casual shooter.
