Armed and Disingenuous

If you were among the listeners to AM 1280 The Patriot last Saturday morning, you heard one of the most inflammatory statements ever uttered by an American politician.  In fact, you actually heard a member of Congress call for an open, armed revolt against the U.S. government!

Happen to miss it?  So did everyone else who was actually listening to the “First Hour” of the Northern Alliance Radio Network.  Fortunately those intrepid journalists over at Politico, recycling a University of Minnesota blog post, have recast Rep. Michele Bachmann’s off-the-cuff comments on “climate change” so now we all know that we missed the moment where “Bachmann urges “armed” revolt over climate plan.”

“I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us ‘having a revolution every now and then is a good thing,’ and the people – we the people – are going to have to fight back hard if we’re not going to lose our country. And I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United States.”

Patrick Henry, it ain’t.  Nor is it Bachmann’s sic semper tyrannis to the Administration.

Never at a loss for hyperbole, Bachmann has toe-tickled her tonsils plenty of times in her brief tenure in the U.S. House, but these comments are hardly provocative – even by her standards.  “Armed and dangerous” on the energy tax issue isn’t exactly a call to the ramparts or for the storming of the Climateologists’ Bastille.  It’s a fairly tame – and lame – metaphor for pushing back against global warming “science.”  If that equates to calling for armed revolt, then Doug Williams needs to be among the first rounded up for domestic terrorism.

Bachmann dug this hole with her “anti-American” comments about Barack Obama last fall, meaning that every press outlet and left-of-center opponent will assume the worst when she opens her mouth.
